  • Dr. Barry N. Taylor is a NIST Scientist Emeritus in the Fundamental Constants Data Center (FCDC) in the Atomic Physics Division of the NIST Physics Laboratory. He has served in this capacity since his retirement from NIST in March 2001 after over 31 years of Federal Service.

  • Dr. Taylor received a Ph.D. in low temperature, condensed matter physics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1963, and remained at Penn as an instructor and later as an assistant professor of physics, until he joined RCA Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey in 1966 as a research scientist. He joined NIST (then the National Bureau of Standards or NBS) in 1970 as Chief of the Absolute Electrical Measurements Section, served as Chief of the NBS Electricity Division (and its successor) starting in 1974, and was Manager of the FCDC from 1988 until his retirement. He has been, and continues to be, active in many professional, national, and international standardizing committees, and has served as chair of a number of such committees.

  • Dr. Taylor is the author of over 120 publications, the recipient of several prizes including U.S. Department of Commerce Silver and Gold Medals, a Distinguished Executive Presidential Rank Award, and the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) Prize 2000. Dr. Taylor is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics (U.K.), is a Life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and is a Distinguished Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Metrology.

Research Interests

Current research activities focus on the periodic CODATA compilations of recommended values of the fundamental physical constants and on the development and establishment of an improved International System of Units (SI).
