NBS physicist adds liquid nitrogen refrigerant to outer flask of cryostat containing sample of cobalt-60. The large magnet below was used to cool the cobalt sample to about 0.003 K by the adiabatic demagnetization method. Gamma ray counters for determining the degree of polarization of the cobalt are visible at left and lower right, amplifier for beta-ray counter at upper center.
